At the eighteenth edition of EoS, there were three screenings of almost forty films, from film production courses from across the UK. Awards were presented to one winner in each screening plus an overall audience prize, these are the winners and the judges comments.
Screening One
The Winner of Eat Our Shorts 2022 - Screening Number 1 is :
The Birth of Butterflies
From Coventry University :
Writer Director Kate Price
Cinematographer David Bohus
Producer Katerina Kubisova
Judges comments:
This is an exceptionally well-crafted film, using crisp and palpable cinematography with an excellent colour grade. There is impeccable direction, and while the final twist is somehow unnecessary, the visual experience of the relationship between the two leads is outstanding. The narrative allows for a connection with the characters, without preaching. The questions it raises are relevant, and ultimately inevitable, there is an excellent tone throughout this film, showing a mature understanding of film language and technique, with a score that creates pace and atmosphere.
Screening Two
The Winner of Eat Our Shorts 2022 - Screening Number 2 is :
Hughesovka – A Welsh Town in Ukraine.
From Cardiff University
Director Dewi Morris
This is a very strong documentary, with a big story, of current significance. It has a strong family link that is highly topical and typical regarding the war in Ukraine. There is a very effective compression of a sizeable story into a short doc, which makes great use of archive film, still images, and creative use of captions and piano music to suit the period. The film shows excellent, detailed research, a strong soundtrack and edit, and should gain a wide audience!
Screening Three
The Winner of Eat Our Shorts 2022 - Screening Number 3 is:
My Name is Wendy
From the Arts University Plymouth
Director Lauren Baker
Score by Ella Roberts
This is a vibrant creative animation with a very serious underlining theme as the backbone of its story. In Screening 3, there were some excellent experimental, abstract animations, and live action projects that dive into dark themes. There were also films that dealt with emotional, and sensitive subject matter, making this a difficult section to judge, but the winner in this category stood out as it managed to encapsulate all of the above. It creatively constructs a world from the emotions and turmoil of the character, to display the monstrosity of such a sensitive dark issue.
