Judges’ comments:

‘This poetic documentary, which guides us through the environment, is a strong character piece about a place. Tight, mesmerising, impressionistic editing with a good use of montage gives a textural depth to the expressive black and white filming’.

 Best Sound: Wrens

Anglia Ruskin University

Sound: Henry Blakeway.

Dir. Hana Harvey Crysell

This soundtrack works on many levels both consciously and subconsciously. There is a highly skilled and rich base layer that is well mixed, functional, with subtle perspective and notable use of foreground mid ground and background, creating appropriate emphasis. The sound design illustrates a whole world beyond the frame, allowing the viewer to journey to another location within their imagination. This alternative story space supports the narrative and extends it to add another level of subjectivity and immersion. Overall, this is extremely creative sound design that walks a perfect balance between style and reality, placing us firmly in an aural landscape far from home and of another era. Congratulations to all the team and particularly sound designer Henry Blakeway.

 Special mention to: Unsee Me.

The judges felt that this is a film which shows great promise. It has the imaginative and creative strength of a personal voice to be encouraged. Effective sound editing and use of special effects in creating an inner world filled with the anxiety of how others see us is accompanied by a good rhythm in the picture edit. The mise-en-scene and production design was both poetically expressive and at times ingenious.
